Melinda Webber, a lecturer in School of Teaching Learning and Development at the University of Auckland suggests that we need to re-think the way in which we view “kiwi-ness” and “New Zealand-ness” because New Zealanders’ concepts of identity are changing and will continue to do so. Last year, she released a book entitled “Walking The Space Between: Identity and Māori / Pākehā” which she hopes will not only encourage debate about identity in New Zealand but also help teachers understand the issues faced by their students of mixed descent.
